Former Mexican world champion Juan Manuel Marquez announced that he turned down an offer of $150 million dollars to fight Manny Pacquiao for the fifth time.
Marquez was visiting Puerto Rico, where he announced an alliance with Miguel Cotto to promote fights. On the Island of Enchantment he went to the SoLpresa program hosted by youtuber Chente Ydrach.
Marquez did not want to fight Pacquiao
Marquez faced Manny Pacquiao for the fourth time on December 8, 2012. In the first three fights the record was two wins for the Filipino and one draw.
The fourth fight took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Mexican scored one of the most important wins of his career with a shocking knockout in the sixth round.
After that win there was much talk of a fifth bout, but the Mexican turned it down.
“They offered on the table $150 million for a fifth fight, but I said ‘no, I don’t want a fifth fight. Better the pride, the dignity, the love for the sport’, and the most important victory of my life because we had beaten the best pound-for-pound fighter at that time,” mentioned the Mexican boxer.
El “Dinamita” retired from boxing in 2014, has a lifetime record of 56 victories, 40 of them by knockout, and a margin of 7 defeats. In June 2022 he was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York.
