Samuel wasn’t working out with the team, even though he still attended the facility, as he didn’t wan’t to have the risk of injury before inking what was supposed and ended up being a massive deal.
The 49ers gave Samuel a three year extension worth up to $73.5 million, getting $58.1 million guaranteed at signing.
The superstar wide receiver will be under 30 years old when he negotiates his next contract, which puts him in line fo another huge payday.
Rocky relationship between Samuel and the 49ers this offseason
During the offseason Deebo Samuel deleted all references to the San Francisco 49ers from his Instagram account, immediately sparking speculation, and shortly after requesting a trade from the team due to them showing no signs of trying to meet his contractual demands.
One of the main reasons he attributed to wanting to change teams was his use as a hybrid wide receiver/running back, so he was interested in trying out another offensive scheme around the league.
There were several teams interested in the former second round pick, but the 49ers got a deal done to keep one of their main offensive weapons from last season, in what will be QB Trey Lance’s first season as a starter in the NFL.
Huge offseason for wide receivers in the NFL
Up and coming wide receivers around the United States are surely celebrating as they see how the NFL’s average salary for the position continues to be on a rise.
And that’s no surprise given that seven WR’s signed deals this offseason that grant them over $24 million a year in average.
A number that will only continue to grow as the NFL’s salary cap keeps getting bigger in line with the league’s plans to reach a $25 billion yearly revenue in the future.
