Kenan Thompson is the longest-running cast member in the history of the legendary NBC show and during an interview with Charlamagne tha god, he hinted that he believes that the show should end coming its 50th season.
20 years and running
Kenan has been with SNL for 20 years, and he is more than aware of what the show has done for the history of comedy and television as a whole.
It will start its 48th season
At this moment, Saturday Night Live is getting ready to start its 48th season and most likely will have a huge bash to commemorate the show’s 50th anniversary, to what Kenan said that who must make the call is showrunner and producer Lorne Michaels who has been at the helm of the show.
50 is a good number to stop at
The reason why Lorne has been so successful at this is that as he puts it “It’s my life’s work” and obviously it’s been quite difficult to make decisions on his level mostly when there have been situations where he needed to be straight and forward although the cast may not agree with his decisions.
He spoke about the show in December
Michaels was outspoken this past December on wanting to leave after the 50th season, however, he wants the show to continue, but he hasn’t found the person to carry on with his legacy “I’d like to see that through, and I have a feeling that’d be a really good time to leave, I care too deeply about it. It’s been my life’s work. So I’m going to do everything I can to see it carry on.”
Kenan believes that the show will change after he leaves
“At that point, you can’t really do the same kind of show,” he expressed. “So that’s unfair to watch it just really go down kind of in flames for real because of those restrictions.”
“They spend a lot of money on that show every week,” Thompson continued. “It’s an expensive show, but it’s a one-of-a-kind thing.”
