One of the USA’s top stars, Weston McKennie, has picked up an injury while on Juventus‘ pre-season tour of his native land.
The Texan midfielder dislocated his left shoulder and is suffering from the damage caused by that. He is expected to be out for around a month.
After an injury-plagued 2021/22, McKennie was hoping for smoother sailing this campaign, but he has been dealt an early setback which will be worrying his country as much as his club.
A doubt for the World Cup?
With the Qatar 2022 World Cup drawing closer, the initial months of this season will be vital for players as they look to stake their claim, find top form or simply stay fit.
McKennie is a key player for the USA and while he should be recovered in plenty of time for the tournament, it is a concern that his season will get off to a delayed start.
The 23-year-old could also miss his country’s friendly games against Japan and Saudi Arabia in late September as they prepare for the tournament. If he doesn’t make those games, his participation in the World Cup could be in real doubt.
Due to the game time he has already missed in the last year or so, US coach Gregg Berhalter will have an XI in mind for the competition that doesn’t include McKennie.
Although he is one of the stars of the team, the worry is that he may arrive at the tournament short of match practice.
