Exclusive breastfeeding reduces infants’ risk of cancer – Experts

The Executive Secretary, Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr Hamza Abubakar, has said that exclusive breastfeeding has help reduced the risk of cancer on infants.

The Board Executive secretary stated this during the Commemoration of the world breastfeeding week in Kaduna with the theme, ‘Step up for breastfeeding, education and support.’

Hamza, who was represented by the state Nutrition officer, Ramatu Haruna, said the state government was committed to conscientise women on improve nutrition among the children in the state.

He, therefore, called on all stakeholders to step up in promoting exclusive breastfeeding in their respective communities.

Also, the Zonal Coordinator of Alive and Thrive, Mrs. Sarah Kwasu, said adequate early breastfeeding prevent Illness, and improve the health and wellbeing of mothers and their children.

She explained that the 2022 World Breastfeeding Week provided an opportunity to conscientise stakeholders at different levels in the society to share ideas, experience on the best practices of bridging the existing gaps on breastfeeding.

She noted that Alive and Thrive is pleased to work closely with the Kaduna State Ministry of Health, the Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Development Agency and other partners in commemorating the World Breastfeeding Week.

“We’ve made significant progress in recent years and we’re committed to do more for the survival of our infant children,” she said.

Some of the stakeholders who share their experienced said feeding infants breast milk only during the first six months of life is one of the essential health survival of their infant during their growth.

The event was attended by health professionals, nutritionists community, and religious, leaders as well as the media and brainstorm on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding during the early life of an infants.
