Arsenal kicked off their season with three points as Gabriel Martinelli‘s first-half header followed by Marc Guehi‘s late own goal helped lead the Gunners past Crystal Palace 2-0.
In what was the opening Premier League match of the season, it was Mikel Arteta‘s men who looked much sharper compared to Patrick Vieira’s side out of the gates. Although Palace responded with a strong showing after the restart, they failed to make the most of the chances that came their way.
New signing Gabriel Jesus looked settled with his new side, showing that the hype around him following his pre-season performances wasn’t misplaced.
Nevertheless, the first goal of the Premier League campaign came via another Brazilian. Martinelli jumped the highest and got his head on Oleksandr Zinchenko‘s nod at the back post.
Although Vicente Guaita got a glove on it, he could do nothing to keep it out and prevent Arsenal from opening the scoring after 20 minutes.
Palace, who looked sluggish out the gate, should have levelled proceedings just before half-time. Joachim Anderson got his head on a swinging free-kick which went straight to Odsonne Edouard. Although the Frenchman had time, he only managed to push his header straight at Aaron Ramsdale.
It should have been 1-1 in the 54th minute. Wilfried Zaha‘s splitting pass put Eberechi Eze in on goal, only for his scuffed finish to once again go straight at on-rushing Ramsdale.
Unfortunately for Palace, their energetic second-half display was wasted when Arsenal wrapped up proceedings in the 85th minute.
Bukayo Saka broke forward down the right, and his cross took a huge deflection off Marc Guehi before finding its way into the back of the net to the delight of the away fans.
