Believe it or not, there was a time in which Kanye West was great friends with John Legend. Two creative geniuses who were giants of their own music genres, it was clearly a no-brainer for both of them. But John Legend always had a more low profile approach when it came to politics, his views leaned more to the liberal side.
Whereas Kanye West started deviating towards the right when Donald Trump was in office. There was also a time in which Kanye West was spotted wearing a ‘Make America Great Again‘ cap, he fully supported Trump and even attended the White House for a meet and greet. This was exactly the moment in which John Legend lost respect for Kanye, he recently revealed it during CNN’s ‘The Axe Files‘ podcast.
Kanye running for office also angered John Legend.
But Kanye’s support for Donald Trump wasn’t the only thing that drove them apart from each other, John Legend also revealed another reason he no longer hangs out with the rapper. This is what he said: “We publicly disagreed on his running for office and supporting Trump. We aren’t friends as much as we used to be. He was upset that I didn’t support his run for presidency of the United States of America – for understandable reasons.
“I think it became too much for us to sustain our friendship, honestly. Like, he’s been pretty upfront with his opinions, his struggles, all the things that he’s dealing with. And I think what you see with him is pretty much what you get. I feel like I’m able to make a big impact through the work that I’m doing, and I like the way that I’m doing it now.”
When it comes to artists getting into politics, there are very few who actually make a career out of it. Former president Ronald Reagan was an accomplished actor before getting into office but there aren’t many more who have gotten as far as he did. For Kanye, politics is something that always appealed to him but he seems to have finally understood that his place is where he can express himself artistically.
In recent years, he’s moved away from politics nd publicly stated he no longer wants to be as involved as he was in the past. Perhaps he learned his lesson after getting publicly scrutinized for wearing that ‘MAGA‘ hat in public as a black man. Anybody who dared to do that was already making a statement and provoking the left, Kanye learned this the hard way. It cost him a friendship with not only John Legend but other artists from his circle as well.
